Cold Nose
In March 2025, dogs were found scattered across Wantage, Stillwater, and Lafayette, New Jersey — Chihuahua and Jack Russell mixes, dumped in open crates along roadsides and trails with no food, no water, and no chance. Some were found running loose in the woods. Some were thrown from moving vehicles. Two were found dead where they were left.
New Jersey State Police launched an investigation. Drones with infrared cameras scoured the woods. Volunteers set traps through the night and continued for the days that followed. Ultimately, three people have been arrested and charged with animal cruelty—but not before 66 lives were turned upside down.
We call them The Sussex Survivors. And Cold Nose Warm Heart Animal Rescue, along with its volunteer foster network, stepped up for 14 of them — taking in dogs who had known nothing but neglect, fear, and the cold of the New Jersey woods.
The 2 we lost are why we fight harder for the 12 who are still here.
Every dollar raised, every surgery scheduled, every dental procedure is for them. too.
Their Story so far...
Founder and Rescue Director Alissa McLaughlin has 15 years of experience in rescue. The pets' health and welfare is the rescue’s top priority. They take pride in matching each pet with the right forever home. Along with a group of top notch volunteer team members, the Cold Nose Crew will make your adoption experience smooth and enjoyable.Advantage!
Since we are a network of foster homes, all of our pets enjoy the love and personal attention which cannot be duplicated in a kennel setting. They live as members of our volunteers' families, enjoying human and usually dog or cat contact and socialization every day. When a potential adopter chooses their new best friend, the foster home can give them insights about the dog or cat that will help them make the right choice. If this truly is the pet for them, the information will help start them off on the right foot (paw?) in their new lives together. Cold Nose adopters enjoy support through every step of the process - from choosing a pet to post adoption check-ins to make sure everyone is happy!
Cold Nose Warm Heart Dog Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing homeless and abandoned dogs and cats from high-kill shelters. Through our network of committed volunteers and foster homes we are able to rescue, provide them with loving temporary care, and find them well matched, thoroughly screened forever homes. We also provide our adopters and the community with information on responsible pet ownership, including spay-neuter, training and good nutrition.
